General Geriatrics and the Diseases of  Aging

At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:

  • Describe the prevalence, diagnostic criteria,risk factors and challenges associated with common medical conditions frequently encountered in the aging adult (dyslipidemias, diabetes, urinary Incontinence and BPH).
  • List the medications currently available to treat these conditions.
  • Evaluate medications that require dose adjustments in patients with renal compromise such as chronic kidney disease (CKD).
  • Analyze the safety concerns for these medications in the aging adult (Beers list).
  • Identify opportunities to improve prescriber and patient education regarding prevention and wellness including preventative immunizations (pneumonia, herpes zoster, etc).

She is currently the Director of Pharmacy residency training at SUNY Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and numerous academic appointments, including clinical associate professor SUNY School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry and School of Pharmacy, Department of Pharmacy Practice, clinical assistant professor at D’Youville College School of Pharmacy and Clinical Instructor for the Erie County Community College’s Pharmacy Technician Certification Program (PTCB). Dr. Demler collaborates with both the National Association of the Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) and the Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties (BPS) to develop board examinations that establish the minimum competencies expected for new practitioners to practice in an ever changing clinical environment.   • List the medications currently available to treat these conditions.
  • Analyze  the safety concerns for these medications when used in an aging adult.
  • Examine the overlapping challenges of adults with reduced ADLs and those who experience social isolation and loneliness.
  • Identify opportunities to improve prescriber and patient education to improve medication adherence and health outcomes.
