Faculty: Bruce D. Shephard, MD, FACOG
Affiliate Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of South Florida College of Medicine, Tampa, Florida.
He serves as a Regional Physician Informaticist for BayCare Health System.
He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of California, Berkeley, attended medical school at the University of California, San Francisco, and completed his Ob-Gyn residency at the University of Miami, Florida.
A former McCain Fellow at the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Dr. Shephard is principal author of “The Complete Guide to Women’s Health.” and a frequent speaker and writer on women’s health issues. He previously served as president of the Hillsborough County Medical Association and is member of the HCMA Board of Trustees.
Dr. Shephard serves on HMO medical advisory boards for Wellcare and AVMed and is a medical reviewer for EQ Health Solutions, which contracts with the Agency for Health Care Administration, Florida. A 2009 selectee of the Marquis’ Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, he received the Albert N. Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018.
Faculty: David Weiland, Jr., MD
Dr. David Weiland is currently the Medical Director with LifePath Hospice, an affiliate of Chapters Health System. He has significant administrative and quality experience as Chief Medical Officer at HCA/Largo Medical Center for 5 years. He also served as the VPMA of Bayfront Medical Center for four years where he also acted as the Director of Medical Education with oversight of two ACGME-accredited residencies. Prior to his work at Bayfront, Dr. Weiland was Medical Director of Suncoast Hospice, where he oversaw quality, community outreach and developed inpatient hospice units and hospital-based palliative care teams. In addition, Dr. Weiland has served as Family Practice Faculty for the University of South Florida. He was board certified in Internal Medicine as well as Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
Dr. Weiland has served on numerous community boards including current Chairman of the Pinellas EMS Advisory Committee and the Pinellas County Commission Pill Mill Task Force dealing with illicit pain medication prescribing. He was the past president of the Pinellas County Medical Association and continues to take an active role in PCMA and FMA activities.
He lectures and presents clinical presentations nationally for the AAFP, including a diverse array of palliative and primary care topics including The Healing Power of Humor, Medical Ethics, Depression, Alzheimer’s Disease, Palliative Pain Management, Quality and Patient safety issues as well as conducts workshops on patient-centered communication to enhance the patient care experience.
Faculty: Tim Carlson, MD
Dr. Carlson achieved his undergraduate degree at Butler University, Indianapolis Indiana and post graduate studies in neuroanatomy at the University of Florida. He completed his physician assistant training with Bachelor of Science in Medicine at the University of Florida. After 17 years in cardiovascular medicine and achieving the 1994 physician assistant of the year award, Dr. Carlson received his Doctor of Medicine degree.
He completed the Bayfront Medical Center Family Practice Residency Program and was the only second physician to receive the 2003 patient excellent award voted by the nursing staff. My vision embraces a commitment for a stronger medical foundation for our community, medical education, and best outcomes for all my patients. Yearly since 2007, the Consumers Research Council of America awarded Dr. Carlson the prestigious “America’s Top Family Doctors”. He received the “Patient’s Choice Award” yearly and “Elite Physician Lifetime Award” achievement 2013. His strong leadership involvement includes numerous hospital appointments including medical executive committees, quality improvement, chief of medicine while advocating for the individual patient care.
Dr. Carlson was recognized as the “Physician of the Year 2006” by Edward White Hospital, St. Petersburg Florida. He remains a community physician preceptor for Bayfront Medical Center Family Practice Resident Program, Assistant Clinical Prof. University of South Florida School of Medicine, Florida State College of Medicine, and Adjunct Professor Barry University. Dr. Carlson lectures both nationally and internationally, advocating healing the world, one patient at a time. Dr. Carlson loves sports, the team physician for the national and international Southwest Florida Figure Skating Club, ISKA sanctioned kickboxing ringside physician, Tampa Bay Rays professional baseball fan care physician and community youth sport teams.
